tomas maier for uniqlo
One of the brands most favorably mentioned by our interviewees and readers is Uniqlo — ageless style and affordable. Uniqlo may be thought of as a youth brand, but I own several pieces from it (the white button down oxford for $29 is great).
The news of the day is that Tomas Maier, creative director of Bottega Veneta, is bringing his easy, relaxed style to the brand. 60-year-old Maier did 9 years at Hermès before opening his own line in 1997 and then in 2001 additionally taking over the Bottega Veneta duties.
What we like is sophisticated design of a long time super pro designer available at a modest price point. It’s of course part of a tradition of fast fashion/designer fashion collaborations, and although we were not that apt to rush to H+M for a Lagerfeld collab, the Maier/Uniqlo seems right up our alley. It’s designed for after work on hot summer days, in a way that is not in the least stuffy. The polos and Ts are looking nice for men, and the cotton long sleeve dress stands out in the women’s line.
