We regularly nerd out on economist Art de Vany’s Facebook page, probably the most data-dense Facebook page ever created. This week he references an article in the journal Metabolism: “Findings indicate that insulin resistance is a central abnormality in the MetS and that muscle mass and strength are strong protective factors independent of insulin resistance and abdominal fat accumulation.” In other words, building lean muscle mass is a really good idea. Everyone needs to get to know their body and what works best for them. Genetic testing is revealing that we all are different, and that one system is not effective for everyone. But that said, I cannot fathom anyone over 50 who would not benefit from strength training. Personally, I am a huge fan of classic moves like dead lifts and squats, but that’s just me. For some people it’s yoga, spin classes or martial arts. We encourage everyone to be curious about what’s out there, and to really get to know what works for them.
