Golden Cacao Latte

When people learn that I reversed stage 3 arthritis in my neck and hands, they implore to know how I did it.  I always credit turmeric. The truth is that I simply riffed on a Golden Tea recipe I read. I love my concoction so much that I decided to replace my daily morning joe and have been on this magic chocolate miracle for over two years now. My arthritis is pretty much unnoticeable to me these days. Even if this drink weren’t responsible for the reduction of my symptoms, it is so delicious and satisfying that I will probably stick with it for the rest of my life.

YIELD  Makes about 3 cups

ACTIVE TIME  10 min

TOTAL TIME  15 min

SUPPLIES French press, lemon zester/grater, milk steamer, mason jar (if making a whole batch at a time)

 INGREDIENTS

  • 3 heaping tablespoons of cacao powder
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of powdered nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon of powdered clove
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 3 teaspoons of fresh ground ginger
  • 3 teaspoons of fresh ground turmeric root
  • Soy, almond or coconut creamer to taste
  • Honey, agave or sweetener to taste

PREPARATION

  • Boil 3 cups of water
  • Add cream of choice into steamer and steam
  • Combine dry ingredients in French press
  • Grate turmeric and ginger and add to French press
  • Add water and stir well
  • Let stand for 5 mins

Cook’s notes:

All ingredients can and should be adjusted for taste. I recommend that you experiment with the recipe yourself. I usually make a big batch all at once in a large mason jar using powdered cacao (fair trade, organic) and good quality cinnamon and nutmeg, and just reserve adding the clove and fresh ground pepper so I can adjust that to taste and mood each morning.

For hangovers, I add extra clove and even sometimes add a little cayenne pepper to start my engine and clear my head.  There are also days that I don’t add any cream and/or weeks where I don’t bother with any sweetener. In a pinch, when I’m traveling or if I run out of fresh ingredients, I use powdered turmeric and powdered ginger (2 teaspoons each).  It’s hard to go back to powder though, after grating these amazing two roots fresh every morning.

And for those of you who don’t already know the benefits of turmeric or cacao vs cocoa, I recommend you research it.  Regardless of their abundant healing properties, starting my morning with this exotic chocolate delight keeps my blood sugar even for hours, curbs my morning appetite and affords me the pleasure of waking up to a sinless chocolate dream, every day.
