Amazed. That is what happens when you are standing in a Swiss village at 5,000 feet and there is the 14,000-foot Matterhorn at the end of the street.
There are mountain hiking paths, scenery that looks like it’s out of Heidi, glaciers, and a mountain train that is more like a Six Flags adventure ride than what we think of as a train. About that train: it’s spendy, $90US for a 30-minute trek up the mountain which you can get on and off at various stations. But just do it. There is nothing like it anywhere on earth. Check the cameras at the summit to make sure there is clear weather, and go for it.
We stayed at The Alpenhof. Nice property, great staff, and a fair-priced prix-fixe dinner. Our spacious room looked out over the small river that runs through town. All the rivers in the area are glacier feed, so they are blue/grey rather than the usual brown/black. The whole Swiss mountain experience is rather fantastic, other worldly, while also being wonderfully cultured.
