Inspired by our cover story with Libby DeLana, we are putting rookie fly fishing on our to-experience list. We are called by the wide open waters, and the fact that fly fishing can be intensely solitary and wonderfully social at the same time. Plus, doesn’t it look like she’s having a good time?
Recommendations From our Adventurists
To make sure we start off right, we asked for recommendations from out intrepid network. Their top two picks:

They specialize in extraordinary hospitality and an intuitive ability to create fulfilling experiences. Kate and Justin pride themselves on being organized, thoughtful, and professional.
Esopus Creel in the Catskills, New York
Esopus Creel is a fly-fishing company located on the banks of Esopus Creek in the high peaks region of the eastern Catskill Mountains. Their New York State licensed guide service offers fly-fishing education and wade trips on the Esopus and neighboring Catskills streams. Opened in 2019, the Esopus Creel fly shop offers gear, flies, and fly-fishing ephemera for anglers at all skill levels. We can’t wait to join them in the middle of the river!
What I absolutely love about fly fishing, is that pretty much everyone has a river nearby he can fly fish at! No need to get a boat or find a larger body of water :D
