Exercise & Long COVID

Long COVID refers to the prolonged experience of symptoms such as “brain fog, muscle pain, and fatigue” and can last for months after someone recovers from COVID-19. Estimates of how many people experience Long COVID range from 15% – 80%. According to Dr. Candida Rebello, “We know that Long COVID causes depression, and we know that by causing damage to the cells that produce insulin it can increase blood glucose levels thereby worsening preexisting diabetes or precipitating the onset of diabetes.” Research suggests that exercise may help by reducing “inflammation that leads to elevated blood glucose and the development and progression of diabetes and clinical depression.” 30-minute sessions of moderate intensity exercise is recommended but doing any form or duration of exercise after recovering from COVID-19 will not only lead to a healthier life but may reduce the risk of developing or worsening diabetes and depressive symptoms.
