Experiments in Enhancing Muscle Recovery

As the body ages, muscles begin to atrophy, especially in bodies that are immobile. A study posted in the Journal of Physiology explored possible muscle treatments for people who were immobile. The study used pericytes, injections that support cells, from young, healthy mice and administered them to aging mice that have gone through a period of muscle immobility. The study found that when aging (and young) mice were given these injections, their muscle fiber recovered and actually combatted inflammation and oxidative stress. These findings are promising for individuals who are forced to be immobile due to an illness and injury and are losing muscle mass.
