We are currently in an organ shortage crisis and approximately 20 people die every day while waiting for a needed organ. Some people are advocating for animal-to-human organ transplants as the solution. As Joe Leventhal, a surgeon and head of the kidney transplant program at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago says about animal-to-human organ transplants, “It’s just around the corner. The problem is, it’s a very, very, very long corner.” There is still a lot of research that must be done to understand whether animal-to-human organ transplants will actually be successful and, if the transplantation is successful, how long and how well will these organs work?
