Retail Watch: Channeling My ’90s Obsession With Everlane

Welcoming warm weather with pieces that are just right. In an increasingly complicated world, '90s-style basics are just the thing.

I don’t know if it’s just me but, when it comes to style, I feel like it’s the ’90s all over again; and I dig it.

Because, besides the sexy ’70s, ’90s style is my favorite. I’m not necessarily talking about “Groove Is in the Heart” rave ’90s a la Deee-Lite (although that was magical). I’m referencing ’90s minimalism, and all of those fantastic yet super basic in the best of ways looks from Belgian designers like Ann Demeulemeester and Americans like Calvin Klein and Narciso Rodriguez. Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Sofia Coppola. Pre-Goop Gwyneth. Yes, these are young references, but that classic cool is timelessly mature and back big time.

The spring runways felt less dopamine-like and more down-to-earth. A return to simplicity in a seemingly overcomplicated world ruled the runways. Returning to classics feels right as a 52-year-old woman looking for ways to feel great in her clothes. And fortunately, you don’t have to break the bank to embrace it.

That’s why I was so excited to get an email from Everlane, a brand I have always found a bit of a bore, but I love their sustainable initiatives and accessible price point for everyday pieces.

Here are a few pieces I’d love to get in my closet as the weather warms.

This dress in white or olive is perfection and would be my go-to all summer long with a pair of Birks and some gold jewelry — a desk-to-dinner classic or perfect for weekends at the beach.

These jeans. They had me at Summer Slouch. I love a jean with a worn-in, loose vibe in warm weather. Great with a tank and some slides or my beloved checkered Vans slip-ons.

This blazer. I know linen can be annoying for its wrinkly wear, but this blazer epitomizes minimalist chic, and I love the ecru hue. Genius and worth the investment. Wear with these for a kick-back suit that could also kick ass.

This dress, too. Dig the industrial, not super girly vibe of this summer shift situation. A throw-on-go classic in the making. I would wear the heck out of this.

I rediscovered skirts last summer and love how they feel against bare legs. Pair this one with a button-down or tank; you have a blank canvas and an excellent foundation piece.

I also love a good feminine tee like this one here and, on the other side, a more masculine tough vibe with a must-have muscle tee, which I would pair with the skirt above.

Oh, and I love a preppy canvas bag for beach weekends; this one has that northeastern salty air appeal but is a bit more elevated. I love how they describe it as “pragmatically oversized.”

Everlane is a bit more spendy than the H&Ms of the world, but I feel their pieces are a great bang for the buck, particularly if you want basics that last. As we welcome spring, it’s worth going for a few pieces that will take you to all the places you want to go where the living is easy. So make like your favorite ’90s style icon and keep it simple and, above all, chic.

  1. Hi, Marty. Thanks for your comment. Everlane sizing goes up to 20 in many styles, so it’s a good option for those looking for more inclusive sizing.
