Low-Glycemic Diet & Tumor Growth

One of the “4 Big Rocks” that we talk about at AGEIST is diet and, while we all have our own individual dietary needs, it is clear that a low-glycemic diet is optimal for weight management, energy, immunity, and reducing the risk of certain diseases. A study by the American Association for Cancer Research explains the connection between diet and tumor growth. The study took mice and put one group on a low-carbohydrate (CHO) diet and the other group on a Western diet. The study found that “tumor penetrance in mice on a Western diet was nearly 50% by the age of 1 year whereas no tumors were detected in mice on the low CHO diet.” The low-carbohydrate, high protein diet slowed tumor growth, lowered blood glucose, insulin, lactate, and even prevented cancer initiation. This is because “cancer cells depend on glucose more than normal cells”, and carbohydrates are sugar molecules that our body breaks down into glucose.
