A recent study published in The Lancet examined a cohort of 135,335 individuals to understand the relationship between diet, cardiovascular disease and mortality. The study specifically looked at a high-carbohydrate diet vs a high-fat diet. The study found that a high-carbohydrate diet was associated with an increased risk of mortality but did not significantly impact the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. The higher fat diet was associated with a lower risk of mortality and also did not significantly impact the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality. However, the fat diet did reduce the risk of stroke.
The study states that because of these compelling findings that higher carbohydrate diets lead to an increased risk of mortality and a higher fat diet leads to a decreased risk of mortality, “Global dietary guidelines should be reconsidered.”
This study reaffirms our belief that no matter what diet you choose, vegetarian, keto, paleo, vegan, etc, it is in our best interest to eat a low-glycemic, lower-carbohydrate diet.
