Having a Sense of Purpose Can Increase Lifespan

Research suggests that having a sense of purpose can increase lifespan and decrease the risk of premature death, regardless of factors like gender or socioeconomic status. A study of over 13,000 adults aged 50 and above found that those with a strong sense of purpose had over a 20 percent lower risk of mortality compared to those with a weaker sense of purpose. This clearer purpose may lead to adopting healthier behaviors, such as being more active, experiencing fewer sleep disturbances, and maintaining a healthy weight. Despite its complexity, finding purpose involves identifying values, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in meaningful activities. Even individuals with fewer resources who discover their purpose enjoy psychological and physiological benefits, supporting longevity and reducing disease burden. To cultivate a greater sense of purpose, prioritize activities that hold personal significance and consistently dedicate time to them.
