A New Type of Pain Management

Opioid use for pain management comes with its own issues including addiction and overdose so creating a new type of pain management is top of mind for many researchers. Evidence suggests that “cooling peripheral nerves can in fact reduce the velocity and amplitude of neural signals that cause pain, leading to pain relief.” Understanding this, a team of researchers created “a soft, bioresorbable, implantable device with the potential to cool peripheral nerves in a minimally invasive, focused manner.” This pain reducing treatment is non-addictive and could be a safer alternative to opioids.
