Vitamin D & Dementia

In a 10-year study, researchers explored vitamin D supplementation’s impact on dementia prevention, adjusting for various factors. They found that vitamin D supplementation was linked to a 22% increase in 5-year dementia-free survival and a 40% reduced risk of dementia. This effect varied by sex, cognitive status, and APOE4 status, with females, cognitively normal individuals, and APOE4 noncarriers experiencing greater risk reductions. Various vitamin D formulations, including calcium-vitamin D, cholecalciferol, and ergocalciferol, showed benefits in reducing dementia risk. However, further research is needed to establish causation and determine the optimal vitamin D dosage for dementia prevention.
