New research out of Japan has found that “Covid-19 vaccination followed months later by a breakthrough SARS-CoV-2 infection offers greater protection against the Omicron variant than do closely spaced vaccination and infection1.” This is an interesting discovery when looking at how different countries are fairing during the recent surge. While the study has not been peer-reviewed, the findings suggest that “countries that saw large numbers of non-Omicron infections in late 2021 have an advantage as 2022 rolls in with the new variant.” While there is still more to understand about Covid-19, Omicron, when the best time to get a booster shot is, and breakthrough cases, any new research to understand why some countries may struggle more or less is beneficial.
