Molecule in Coffee Enhances Muscle Health

Researchers found that trigonelline, a natural molecule in coffee, fenugreek, and the human body, can enhance muscle health and function. Collaborating with multiple universities, they investigated sarcopenia, a condition where aging weakens muscles, leading to loss of mass and strength. The study revealed that declining levels of NAD+ and reduced mitochondrial activity contribute to sarcopenia, with older individuals showing lower trigonelline levels. Introducing trigonelline in pre-clinical models increased NAD+ levels and mitochondrial activity, and maintained muscle function. This discovery suggests the potential of trigonelline as a novel NAD+ precursor, offering promising interventions for healthy aging and age-related diseases alongside lifestyle recommendations like nutrition and physical activity.
