Innovations to Decrease the Cancer Risk From Processed Meat

We are not big fans of eating this stuff, for a range of reasons, but if you are someone who just loves a hot dog at the ball game, we have some good news. Processed meat like hot dogs, sausage, bacon, & salami have carcinogenic effects, meaning they may increase the growth of cancerous cells in our bodies when consumed. Scientists have identified a way of adding natural substitutes to processed meats to reduce their carcinogenic effects by reducing a compound called “nitrates.” According to The University of Reading, studies show that adding “rosemary, green tea, and resveratrol — an extract taken from Japanese Knotweed” can cut the risk of cancer from processed meats. [1]. They also found that the natural additives had “protective effects” that “could be used to reduce some of the potentially harmful effects of nitrite, even in foods where it is not possible to take out nitrite preservatives altogether.”
