Fitness and Recovery at 66: Dave Hippensteel

We are inspired by people who push what they believe they’re capable of at any age. 66-year-old Dave Hippensteel first got into CrossFit at the age of 56. Now, Dave is a 9-time CrossFit Games masters athlete and the champion of the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2020 Masters 60+ Division. Even since he was a child he was sporty and even into his adulthood he remained active. But then he fell in love with CrossFit and decided to train seriously towards the next year’s Open.

Dave’s daughter shares how he has a tendency to overtrain and so recovery has become a big part of his life. Dave uses his WHOOP tracker (which happens to be our favorite tracker, too) to ensure he’s getting enough deep sleep, which aids his recovery process. He also uses the tracker to make sure he is waking and going to sleep at the same time, which we know is imperative for creating consistent, restful sleep. Dave’s story reminds us to treat ourselves like athletes and that recovery is just as important as physical exercise.
