If you have a habit of adding extra salt to your dinner, you may want to break that habit. A recent study of more than 500,000 people, published in the European Heart Journal, found that “those who always added salt to their food had a 28% increased risk of dying prematurely.” The study also found “a lower life expectancy among people who always added salt compared to those who never, or rarely added salt.” While the body needs sodium to function and regulate hydration, it is important to understand how different sodium levels impact your body. Some people seem to be more salt sensitive than others. The study did not make any recommendations as to how much salt should be consumed because more research is needed.
