Psychedelics and Women’s Health

Once only viewed as recreational party drugs, psychedelics are now getting a closer look from the medical community for their use as therapies. According to a recent study in Nature, MDMA-assisted therapy “can virtually ‘cure’ PTSD (i.e., wipe out its diagnostic symptoms) in 70 percent of patients, even those who were unsuccessful with traditional SSRI treatment.” Similarly, there were impressive results for people with depressive disorders when receiving ketamine treatment.

Beyond the mental health benefits of psychedelic therapies, Eastra Health is using these findings and setting their sights on women’s health. Cofounder of Eastra Health Pamela Hadfield “thinks that women will naturally turn to psychedelic-derived medicines” after getting “little to no relief from traditional medications like SSRIs and birth control pills for issues related to PMS and menopause”.
