A Sweetener Good for Your Gut

Did you know that the bulk of your immune system is housed in your gut? What we eat has a big impact on our gut health and thus our immune system—and one unlikely sweetener actually delivers robust gut-boosting benefits, one spoonful at a time. In collaboration with Manukora.

We’ve all felt the effects of too much sugar. While too much can weaken our body’s immune defenses, one special honey in particular possesses the superpowers to actually support our immunity and boost our gut health. Manukora Manuka honey puts all other honey to shame. With several antioxidants, prebiotics, and antimicrobial benefits, it packs a punch of flavor and health benefits.

The Magic of Bees and Trees to Boost Immunity

What makes Manukora’s Manuka honey so special? The bees and the trees. Bees collect nectar from the Manuka tea tree in New Zealand—nectar that is packed with bioactives and three-times more antioxidants and prebiotics than your average honey.

Research on Manuka honey supports a whole host of medicinal benefits. Along with being a natural antioxidant medicine, some studies suggest Manuka honey may have prebiotic properties, meaning it can stimulate the growth of beneficial gut bacteria like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria, which are important for digestive health and immune function (Schell et al., 2022). Unlike other honey, Manuka honey contains a special antibacterial compound called MGO (methylglyoxal), which comes from the nectar of the Manuka tree. This compound can help combat harmful bacteria in the digestive tract, potentially reducing infections and promoting a healthier gut environment (WebMD). By promoting a healthy gut microbiome and reducing inflammation, Manuka honey indirectly supports overall immune function, as a balanced gut microbiome is closely linked to a strong immune system.

By simply harvesting the power and magic of nature, Manukora delivers a honey that contains powerful nutrients, ones that actively support immunity and gut health. Beyond the delicious taste and benefits, you can feel good knowing that Manukora’s Manuka honey is ethically produced. Every batch is collected by master beekeepers in the remote forests of New Zealand, and Manukora third-party tests every single harvest for the MGO potency (more MGO means more antimicrobial benefits). Plus, they make these results available through their QR system, so you can get a spoonful of knowledge with every spoonful you take.

A Spoonful of Sweet Support

Just one spoonful of Manukora Manuka honey coats your tongue with a richness and creaminess that store-bought honey can only dream of. Along with subbing Manukora in as your sweetener of choice to top breakfast foods, bake into desserts, or sweeten your morning beverage of choice, you don’t have to overcomplicate how you enjoy it: Simply eat it straight from a wooden spoon first thing in the morning, letting the creamy texture melt in your mouth and coat your throat. One spoonful will have you wanting more—and you can have it. Simply swap out any other sweeteners for Manukora and reap the benefits every time you’re craving something sweet.

Another easy way to enjoy the complex flavors and health benefits of Manukora’s Manuka Honey is to make an easy tea that will soothe and support your gut health and so much more. Lemons for vitamin C; ginger for digestive support; turmeric for anti-inflammatory properties; cloves for added antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-fungal properties; and (of course) the addition of Manukora Manuka honey makes for a warm beverage with added tummy benefits.

Tummy Tea feat. Manukora

Serving: Makes one teapot’s worth*

*Note: If prepared in a teapot, ingredients will have more time to steep, but you can also make one big mug’s worth too. All ingredient ratios can be adjusted to your personal taste.

Ingredients:

  • Hot water
  • 1 lemon
  • 6–10 cloves
  • Ginger (one knob fresh or roughly 1 tbsp. powder)
  • Turmeric (one knob fresh or roughly 1 tbsp. powder)
  • 1 heaping spoonful of Manukora Manuka honey

Prepare the Tea:

  1. In a teapot or mug, squeeze the juice of half a lemon and add in several lemon slices.
  2. Add a heaping spoonful of Manukora’s Manuka honey along with anywhere between 6 to 10 cloves and a knob of both ginger and turmeric (feel free to keep it whole or slice it). If using ginger and turmeric in powder form, add a big dash of both (roughly 1 tablespoon each).
  3. Pour boiling water over all ingredients and stir until honey is dissolved.
  4. Once warm enough to sip, try it and adjust for taste.
  5. Enjoy sipping on tummy soothing, digestive supporting ingredients!
