Stepping onto smallish courts around the country, one is bound to encounter one of the newest fusions of fashion, sport, and lifestyle. Padel tennis is swiftly becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, just like pickleball was a few years back. As a blend of tennis and squash, it’s not just the sport itself that’s making waves. The fashion is also catching the eye of both athletes and those that sometimes just like to look the part.
Sporty Old-World Charm With a Social Twist
Padel tennis isn’t just a game—it’s an experience. With its origins stemming from the sunny backyards of Mexico, the sport is rapidly gaining popularity in the United States. Padel is relatively low-impact, easy to pick up, and offers a nostalgic and fun way to stay fit and connected. The fast-paced action takes place on an enclosed court made for playing the balls off the wall.
Matches are typically played in doubles, so it’s a great way to socialize with friends, old and new. The social aspect is just as important as the physical. This makes it a healthy choice for those who want to stay active without the pressure of intense competition. It’s also great for those looking for an excuse to shop.
Fashion Meets Function With Tennis-Core
The current fashion vibe many of us have willingly adopted has been dubbed tennis-core. It is a mix of 80s preppy with sporty functionality that can easily work for anything. Think: morning padel games, running errands, long lunches, Zoom calls, or relaxing at home. It’s also a great way to transition into winter. The look is easy to layer with sweaters, vests, or jackets.
For the Gentlemen: This modern twist on an Ivy League look has you looking put together yet relaxed. Think tailored shorts (Vouri and Lululemon) or pants (Peter Millar and Faherty), polo shirts (Johnnie – O and Rhoback), sweaters (Alan Paine and J.Crew), and tennis shoes (On Cloud or Oliver Cabell). We’re going for sophistication with maximum comfort.
Stick to neutral colors like white, navy, or black for versatility, but layer in subtle patterns or colors to pull in your own style. Complete the look with sunglasses (Ray Ban or Burberry), hats (Adidas or Prince), and a fitness tracking watch (Apple or WHOOP).
For the Ladies: This nod to quiet luxury leans into classic, tailored silhouettes perfect for looking refined and comfortable. Think track dresses (BURU and Vuori), skorts (Carbon 38 and Athleta), cable sweaters (Tuckernuck and Johnnie-O), and tennis shoes (Loewe and Sans Matin).
While this type of look relies heavily on neutral shades like black, white, gray, and navy, you can easily add in pops of on-trend colors (like greens, purples, oranges, dark browns, and reds) with accessories. Complete your look with a purse (Tory Burch or Banana Republic), sunglasses (Krewe or Barton Perreira), headbands (Lele Sadoughi or Jennifer Behr), a fitness tracking watch (Apple or Garmin), and—of course—a tennis bracelet.
Padel Tennis: The Perfect Match
For those of us who fully enjoyed life in the 80s, this dual trend is a fun trip down memory lane, allowing us to give in to the feelings of nostalgia we often feel as the seasons change. Who knew padel tennis could bring together physical activity, social interaction, and style.
Anyone else out there a fan of this fashion trend? Or, are there any avid padel players out there? We’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.
It is amazing how quickly this has become a market, but all so stylish and attractive to a wide age range.
Agreed! What’s not to love about the athleisure vibes of “tennis core” and the ability to “make it your own”. My take on tennis-core looks a lot different than either of my daughter’s (ages 19 and 22). And I’ve not tried a sport like this before as I’ve always been more of a runner, but I think blending the social aspect into exercise is growing in appeal to me.
