Private islands available for vacations are not nearly as rare as one might think—and your awareness of these incredible vacation spots might depend on your proximity to water. This type of vacation is usually viewed as an exotic luxury reserved for faraway paradises, but there are incredible private islands a lot closer than you may think (something an AGEIST team member was fortunate to recently experience).
While maybe not on your radar when vacation planning, these exclusive getaways combine serenity, privacy, and the perfect touch of opulence. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat, a grand celebration venue, or a new adventure, private islands have extraordinary features to offer. Here are a few island getaways definitely worth looking into, especially during these cold winter months.
1. Sunset Key Cottages, Florida
Located just off the coast of Key West, this 27-acre island is certainly a slice of tropical paradise. Sunset Key is only available via a short ferry ride from Key West, making it both convenient and secluded. The cottages, ranging from one to four bedrooms, provide stunning ocean views which are perfect for families, romantic getaways, and secluded escapes.
What sets Sunset Key apart are the luxurious amenities: a pristine private beach, a lush tropical pool, and the exquisite spa. Dining at the island’s Latitudes Restaurant is a must as the fresh, local ingredients always create an unforgettable culinary experience. For those seeking relaxation with a side of adventure, this island offers an unmatched Floridian escape.
Travel tip: You can also gain access to the island by making a lunch or dinner reservation at Latitude’s. This is how we first experienced the island prior to staying in one of their lovely cottages.

2. Grace Island, Connecticut
Nestled within the charming group of 25 archipelagos, the Thimble Islands are just off the coast of Branford, Connecticut, and Grace Island offers a rich blend of history and exclusivity. Coined “One of the Best Places on Earth” by the New York Times, The Queen of Thimbles is only accessible by ferry or private boat, making the journey itself an enchanting prelude to the destination.
The wooded islands are topped with Victorian-era summer cottages, replete with ginger bread trimming, making the destination ideal for weddings, retreats, vacations, and family reunions. You can expect breath-taking panoramic views, quiet seclusion, and that charming New England coastal vibe.
3. Little St. Simons Island, Georgia
Known as the island where nature is the luxury, this 11,000-acre natural haven is a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and those seeking intimacy. Accessible only by boat, The Lodge on Little St. Simons Island hosts just 32 guests at a time and offers unparalleled exclusivity.
Guests can immerse themselves in the island’s wilderness, participating in birdwatching, fishing, and naturalist-led excursions. With rates covering meals, boat transfers, and guided tours, the experience is as all-inclusive as it is immersive. Nature lovers will appreciate its untouched beauty and eco-conscious ethos.
Travel tip: In the fall and winter months, be sure not to miss the staff-hosted island oyster roast!

4. Republic Island, Michigan
This two-acre island on the Michigamme River is the definition of rustic charm. Guests can access Republic Island by kayak, canoe, or small boat. This makes it perfect for adventurers and those looking to unplug from the modern world.
Accommodations consist of a cozy cabin equipped for self-catering, with plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and observing the local wildlife. Built in the late 1800s to early 1900s, the log cabin accommodates up to four adults and was rumored to have once served as a church. The island’s appeal lies in its simplicity—a chance to reconnect with nature in the heart of Michigan’s wilderness.
5. Savary Island, British Columbia, Canada
Located just across the U.S.-Canada border, Savary Island is worth the trip. Its proximity to Washington state makes it an accessible option for U.S. travelers. This five-mile island is famous for its sandy beaches, temperate climate, and unusually warm waters, which are rare in the Pacific Northwest.
Reachable by boat or small aircraft, Savary Island offers private cabin rentals that provide a serene and comfortable escape. While known for their white sand, there are some black sand beaches rumored to have a bit of gold mixed in. With its unique location and natural beauty, it’s a dream destination for beach lovers.

6. Cottage Island, Idaho
Tucked away on the expansive Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho’s largest lake, Cottage Island offers a luxurious escape in the Pacific Northwest. Accessible by private boat, this nearly nine-acre island promises tranquility and scenic beauty with beautiful rock outcroppings and multiple pebble beaches.
The modern yet rustic cabins of Cottage Island feature gourmet kitchens and spacious living areas. Guests can enjoy private beaches, panoramic lake views, and an abundance of water activities, from boating to swimming. As you stroll along the shoreline of the crystal-clear waters, this island perfectly balances luxury with the raw beauty of Idaho’s landscape.
The Allure of Private Island Vacations
What makes private islands so alluring is their exclusivity and the ability to disconnect from the bustling world. Each of these destinations offers unique features: Sunset Key’s tropical sophistication, Grace Island’s historical charm, Little St. Simons Island’s untouched wilderness, Republic Island’s rustic tranquility, Savary Island’s coastal allure, and Cottage Island’s luxurious seclusion.
Access to these islands ranges from quick ferry rides and private boats to more adventurous options like kayaking or small aircraft, adding a touch of excitement to the journey. With a variety of natural landscapes, you’re guaranteed a unique experience combining nature, luxury, and privacy.
So, the next time you’re planning a vacation, why not skip the usual resorts and embrace the charm of a private island retreat? With a multitude of options to choose from, the perfect getaway might be more accessible than you think.

What a Fantastic article! Most of these places I have never been too but reading about each of these islands makes me want to visit all! Thank you for sharing such great travel tips!
I’ve only been to one, but researching these types of islands was fun! I had absolutely no idea how many of these little “hidden gems” there were in the US. I’d like to visit one of the more rustic locations next.
$4,900.00 for a two-night stay at Sunset Key; I guess if one has to ask…
Yes, Sunset Key is one of the pricier locations mentioned – there are a very wide variety of private and semi-private options available across the US with regards to cost and vacation “vibe”. The SK cottages have multiple bedrooms, allowing for travel with friends or family to split the costs (that’s what we did!)
