The TWA Hotel

For anyone who has spent a lot of time traveling through JFK over the last 4 decades, here is one to watch. The former TWA terminal at the airport this week announced that it will be ready to open as a hotel in 2019.

I remember vividly that being in the Eero Saarinen-designed TWA terminal (closed since the iconic airline capitulated in 2001) was an experience not unlike entering a cathedral built for the devotees of air travel.  It was the epitome of glorious, uplifting modernist design — one of the single most beautiful buildings I have ever been in. Thankfully, it is now being restored and repurposed, with 505 hotel rooms being built, flanking the original building, bars, amenities and a 10,000 ft observation deck. The public-private partnership between the Port Authority and MCR Development is scheduled to open in 18 months. Click here for details.
