Nat Geo Expeditions to Antarctica

the big freeze

When we first started AGEIST, one of the short-hand comments we frequently uttered to distinguish our group was an aversion to cruise ship vacations. Now, we’re forced to admit, there are a few exceptions to this rule, and Antarctica is one of them. Thankfully, the “Opinionator” (and good friend of ours) Irma Zandl recently returned from a trip to the frozen continent. On a boat of 150 people (too large a group for her taste) hosted by Nat Geo Expeditions, Zandl gazed upon Orcas and penguins on (or slightly adrift of) a continent only around 30,000 people visit each year. There is a good reason for that of course: environmental and climate considerations limit the size of groups, as does the financial expense of it all. But for those of you planning it, we recommend heading over to Irma’s site for a run-down of what to expect – complete with positives, and some hilarious negatives.
