Deia, Majorca

Deia, Majorca, Spain

If you are headed out for a summer break, you probably picked your special spot in the sun some time ago. But should you be procrastinating or simply feeling overwhelmed by the bounty of choice, we would like to make a recommendation: Deia on the island of Majorca.(The above image is Irene, 54, check out her profile).

Why Deia? The astonishing beauty of being nestled on a virtual cliff between majestic mountains and the bluest of blue Med. There is very little parking available in the village, and no place for tour buses to pull over, thus built in mob-free exclusivity. It carries a heritage of being an original jet-set bohemian enclave, albeit now a bit more conventional with the Belmond La Residencia. But why stay there when you can have a nice Airbnb in the village for little money that is way cooler?

The entire section of this coast is zigzagged with ancient, and we really mean ancient, paths that make it an enchanting walk from anywhere through pine forests above the sea to get your fish dinner in Cala Deia Beach.  All along this section there are secret caves and swimming spots.  There is also the delightful Sa Fonda, an outdoor bar in town where all manner of music, local and global, is played and the crowd ranges from 14-90. Delightful. Deia is an easy 40-minute drive from the international airport at Palma.
