How Making One Small Decision Will Lead to Claiming Your Future: David Richman, 57

On the SuperAge podcast, David Richman discusses how he transformed his health and life — and how you can, too.

How do we pull ourselves out of a dark place and into a healthier, happier life? Why do we feel guilty when we take care of ourselves? How can we break the habit of comparing ourselves to others? What is the best way to cope with emotional trauma?

At the age of 39, David Richman reached arguably the lowest point in his life. He was in an abusive relationship with an alcoholic, he was overweight, he was a smoker, and his health was failing. He was struggling. One day, he looked in the mirror and asked himself: “What do you want to be?” His answer? “I want to be an athlete.” 18 years later, David is a motivational speaker, author, trainer, and consultant. He’s done more Iron Man races than you can count on two hands and he is just getting started. David joins us on the SuperAge podcast to talk about his journey from darkness to health and happiness, the wisdom and stories that he offers in his books, how to cope with trauma, and more.

What you will learn in this episode:

  • How to pick yourself up out of a dark place
  • How to re-frame your mindset to one of an athlete
  • How living for yourself allows you to show up for your loved ones
  • How to work towards the best version of you
  • How to stop comparing yourself to others and how comparison will get in your way
  • How to cope with trauma

“You can’t be a dead hero. So you’ve got to take care of yourself first before you can take care of others.”

“Just be the best you. Don’t try to be the best them.”

“If you do take one more step, that’s further than you’ve ever pushed yourself in your life.”

“I want to be the guy that always believes that my best days are ahead of me. So if I want to be an athlete, I’m going to keep being athletic. If I want to go start a business, I’m going to do it. If I want to write more books, I’m going to do it.”
