Since You Asked: TikTok Dancing Queen

If your grandkids are mortified by your dancing on TikTok, should you tone it down? Susan offers a joyful way forward.

Dear Susan,
I’ve recently discovered the joy of TikTok, but my grandkids are mortified by my dance videos. Should I tone it down or keep busting moves?

Dear TikTok Dancing Queen,

First off, you deserve a standing ovation for jumping into the TikTok dance scene with both feet. Do you see what I did there? You’ve discovered a whole new way to have fun, and that’s something worth celebrating!

Now, let’s talk about those grandkids of yours who are currently turning fifty shades of embarrassed. Should you tone it down for their sake? Absolutely not! Here’s why you should keep dancing like there’s no tomorrow, even if it makes them cringe a bit. In fact, it teaches them to be brave and do uncomfortable things.

Embarrassment Is a Rite of Passage

It’s practically your grandparental duty to embarrass your grandkids. They owe you for all the times they’ve tried to teach you about memes or explained TikTok trends like you were born in the Stone Age. This is your time to shine! In fact, you can get them to join you in your videos — you can revive the Macarena!!!

Stay Fit and Have Fun

Dancing is fantastic exercise. Why bore yourself with a treadmill when you can work up a sweat while having a blast? It’s like getting a workout and a party all in one. Plus, it’s way more fun to tell people you’re a TikTok star than to say you’re hitting the gym.

Leave a Legacy of Fun

Your TikTok videos are like a digital scrapbook. One day, your grandkids will proudly show their friends, saying, “Look at my grandparent — total legend!” They might be embarrassed now but, trust me, they’ll come around.

Spread Joy

You’ve found something that makes you happy, and that’s pure gold. Life’s too short to worry about what others think. Embrace your joy and dance like nobody’s watching. Your happiness is contagious and, eventually, even your grandkids will catch on. I have a friend who is over 50, who is a TikTok superstar, and she has had so much success by dancing in her videos.

Bridge the Generation Gap

Being a TikTok Dancing Queen is a great way to connect with younger generations. Sure, your grandkids might cringe now, but they’ll appreciate how you’ve stayed relevant and connected. Plus, you’re showing them that fun and creativity don’t have an age limit.

So, keep those dance moves coming! Add a little extra flair; maybe even try a new dance challenge. I think it’s time to see the Funky Chicken or, my favorite, The Hustle!!! Let your grandkids squirm a bit — it builds character. And who knows? Maybe they’ll join you in a dance video someday. Stranger things have happened.

Dance like everyone’s watching because they are — and they secretly love it, even if they won’t admit it. Cue ABBA — you’re a Dancing Queen, an inspiration, and a whole lot of fun.

Keep busting those moves!

With much admiration and a virtual high-five,

Susan

  1. I feel like your answer for the grandma dancing on TikTok was meant for me!! I’ve been “shaking my booty” on TikTok and now Instagram and always in the back of my mind is … what are my grandchildren thinking. Turns out I didn’t have to worry because it’s my son.. their father.. who gets embarrassed the most!
