Since You Asked: Are Weight-Loss Tools Like CoolSculpting Too Good to Be True?

Weight-loss procedures can be tempting, but are they worth it? Susan breaks it down to help you decide what suits you best

Dear Susan,
I am a 54-year-old woman drawn to the allure of weight loss tools like Emsculpt, CoolSculpting, and radio frequency treatments that claim to burn fat and tighten skin. Are they too good to be true? I am skeptical but tempted.

Dear Darling Reader,
If I had a dollar for every time I saw an ad promising a weight loss tool to melt, freeze, or jiggle away my “problem areas,” I’d have my own private island by now, complete with a pool boy named Diego. But before we all start booking our trips to the land of cellulite-free dreams, let’s chat about what these options — Emsculpt, CoolSculpting, and radio frequency treatments — might do to your wallet, your body, and maybe even your pride. Trust me, I’ve been there.

1. Emsculpt: The Muscle Whisperer

Emsculpt uses high-intensity electromagnetic energy to give your muscles a workout that would make even a personal trainer cry. Think 20,000 crunches in 30 minutes — without breaking a sweat. But those invisible sit-ups come with a price tag:

  • Estimated Cost: Typically, Emsculpt weight loss tool treatments run between $750 to $1,000 per session. Since most people need around 4 sessions spaced a few weeks apart for optimal results, you’re looking at a total cost of $3,000 to $4,000.
  • Maintenance Costs: For ongoing results, maintenance sessions are recommended every few months, which means more $$$.
  • Tingling or Numbness: Some people report a tingling sensation or mild numbness, which typically goes away after a short while.

2. CoolSculpting: The Fat Freezer

Let me tell you a little story about CoolSculpting. Years ago, I found myself about 40 pounds overweight and curious to see what CoolSculpting could do for me. I waltzed into the consultation, ready to hear how a few little treatments would have me beach-ready by summer. But then they brought out these paddles — because apparently, to freeze your fat, they need to fit these paddles over the target area. Here’s the kicker: I was told there weren’t enough paddles in the room to cover all my problem areas. Not even close! And the cost to use enough paddles to treat me? Over $10,000. I walked out of there feeling like I needed to find a deep-fryer for my feelings. So, yes, CoolSculpting can work, but it’s definitely not for everyone — or every budget.

  • Estimated Cost: Typically, it’s $600 to $1,500 per session, per area. Multiple sessions and areas mean the cost can easily reach $2,000 to $4,000 or more. If you’re in a situation like I was, where multiple paddles and sessions are required, you might be looking at upwards of $10,000.
  • Maintenance Costs: Fat cells that are frozen away don’t come back, but new fat can develop if you gain weight, which might mean more treatments down the line.
  • Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH): This is a rare side effect where instead of shrinking, the fat cells expand and harden. So, instead of losing that belly pooch, you might get a bonus one. It’s like your fat saying, “Oh, you think you can get rid of me that easily? Ha!”

3. Radio Frequency: The Skin Shrinking Weight Loss Tool

Radio frequency treatments use energy waves to heat the deep layers of your skin, stimulating collagen and tightening things up a bit. It’s like giving your skin a pep talk with a heated microphone:

  • Estimated Cost: A single session of radio frequency treatment typically ranges from $200 to $500. Multiple sessions (usually 3 to 5) are often needed for noticeable results, bringing the total to $600 to $2,500.
  • Maintenance Costs: To keep your skin looking tight and toned, maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 6 to 12 months. So, this is an ongoing investment, not a one-and-done deal.
  • Burns and Blisters: Although rare, if the device is used incorrectly or the settings are too high, there’s a risk of burns or blisters. So, maybe don’t go bargain hunting for this one on Groupon.

4. The Total Investment

If you’re considering a combination of these treatments, you could easily be looking at $5,000 to $10,000 or more. And remember, none of these treatments replace the need for a healthy lifestyle. Think of them as a boost, not a substitute for good habits. It’s like buying a really expensive cake and then putting it on a fancy plate — if the cake is bad, the plate isn’t going to save it.

5. Consult a Professional:

Before you open your wallet, have a chat with a licensed professional who can provide a personalized plan and a realistic estimate of costs based on your specific needs. See if you can find some women or men that have done the treatments. People want quick fixes, so take your time and do your research. Reddit is a great network to ask about results, outcomes, etc.

And whatever you do, don’t go for the budget option at the back of the strip mall. Your body deserves the best!

In the end, whether you choose to melt, freeze, or just embrace (I highly recommend) every glorious inch of yourself, remember this: Confidence and self-love are the best treatments around. They cost nothing and deliver results that no machine can match. You are Fabulous!

Editor’s Note: These procedures are not risk free. These are medical treatments and they can go wrong: see Linda Evangelista. You want a highly skilled MD doing these, not a med-spa.
