Beauty and Strength in Commitment
“The only certainty in life is the passage of time. So ask yourself how you can benefit from it. Then the passage of time can really be kind of fun.”
Growing up next door to Jimi Hendrix in Greenwich, it took Doug 58 years to leave his native New York. But three years ago he finally moved to LA with his wife. The first, he hopes, of many more moves.
AGEIST interviewed him in his studio, where he tells me he has spent the last few years contemplating what he describes as a more “noble” style of living. “I came to realize that there is beauty and strength in commitment. Which I think led to the decision to get a giant studio and make the work I make.” That, and Doug recently became a father for the first time.
“The one thing I refuse to give up is dancing,” says Doug, who took an African dance class just last night. “Dance, when done vigorously, is the most natural, effective form of exercise.”
Doug recently bought a 70-foot sailboat and is investigating how his wife and new daughter might fair on a trip down to Mexico.
“I don’t know if I ever had a vision for what life would be like at this point. But emotionally things are easier for me now than when I was 35. Less negativity. Now I am all in.”
