Your Gut Is Causing Your Cravings

We know from our conversation with Dr. Emeran Mayer on the SuperAge podcast that our gut microbiome is incredibly important to our health; it is also connected to things like our immune system and our brain health. New research from the University of Pittsburgh indicates that “the microbes in animals’ guts influence what they choose to eat, making substances that prompt cravings for different kinds of foods.” The study took 30 mice and gave them 3 different diets. What the researchers found was that the different groups of mice all chose foods rich in different nutrients which indicated that their varied microbiomes did in fact impact the diet they chose. This finding shows how much power our gut microbiomes have over our health and even behaviors.
