We have Two Types of Immune Systems?

Our immune system has two components: “the innate and adaptive immune systems.” The innate system is our first line of defense, “it is nonspecific and responds in the same way to all pathogens” and includes things like our skin, mucus, and certain cells. Meanwhile, the adaptive immune system is not as fast-acting. It “takes longer (days to weeks) and is highly targeted” and it has to form “antibodies against proteins on the surface of a pathogen—called antigens—and creates an immunological memory that results in a faster response if the same pathogen is reencountered.” Both are important and both can be supported with a healthy lifestyle including “managing stress, getting proper exercise, and a good diet.”
