The Dangers of Prolonged Sitting

Prolonged sitting has a number of negative health outcomes but, in today’s world, we may find ourselves sitting more at our desk, on the couch, or in our car. A recent study investigated the effects on our cardiometabolic health of interrupting prolonged sitting with frequent but short “bouts of standing and light-intensity walking.” The study found that “Frequent short interruptions of standing significantly attenuated postprandial glucose compared to prolonged sitting; however, light-intensity walking was found to represent a superior physical activity break.” Put this into practice by getting up and moving every hour and perhaps add in a few short, light-intensity walks to your day.
