Taurine, a naturally occurring metabolite abundant in humans and animals, supports immune health and nervous system function. Low taurine levels in humans are linked to higher risks of various health issues, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obesity, inflammation, and liver disease. A study published in Science revealed that taurine supplementation increased lifespan in worms and mice, extending healthspan in mice and monkeys. The findings suggest that restoring taurine concentrations to youthful levels could be an anti-aging intervention in humans, prompting calls for clinical trials. Mechanistically, taurine supplementation addressed multiple aging hallmarks, including reducing cellular senescence, protecting against telomerase deficiency, suppressing mitochondrial dysfunction, and decreasing DNA damage and inflammation. The interdisciplinary study involved researchers from numerous organizations worldwide, demonstrating reproducible results in various species. While cautioning against self-dosing, the authors noted that exercise and dietary sources, such as shellfish and dark meat of turkey and chicken, can naturally boost taurine levels.
