Stress is detrimental to all aspects of our health. A new study from the University of Southern California investigates stress’ impact on how quickly our immune system ages. The study found that stress in the form of “traumatic events, job strain, everyday stressors and discrimination” accelerates the aging of our immune system and this could lead to an increased risk of “cancer, cardiovascular disease and illness from infections such as COVID-19.” Knowing how detrimental stress is to our health, it is wise to add de-stressing activities into your daily routine like meditation, yoga, reading, time with loved ones, or time off from work. The study also found that maintaining your health in other ways, namely your diet and exercise routine, “may help offset the immune aging associated with stress.”
