Repeated Antibiotic Use and Gut Health

Recent studies conducted by researchers at Umeå University and Tartu University have uncovered concerning effects of repeated antibiotic use on gut health. Their findings reveal that a history of multiple antibiotic courses can lead to lasting alterations in gut bacteria composition, which in turn damages the protective mucus barrier in the intestines. Additionally, the researchers discovered that certain antibiotics can directly impair the mucus barrier, independent of their effects on gut bacteria. These studies highlight the potential long-term consequences of antibiotic use on intestinal health, even months after treatment. The researchers emphasize that these findings underscore the importance of responsible antibiotic administration to minimize unintended harm to the gut’s protective mechanisms.
