Cardiovascular aging involves the gradual accumulation of damage to the heart, arteries, veins, capillaries, and associated organ systems, often leading to cardiovascular disease, a leading global cause of death. In this research, scientists utilized machine learning methodologies alongside cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and electrocardiogram data from 39,559 participants in the UK Biobank. Their objective was to predict cardiovascular age and identify the genetic and environmental influences on premature cardiovascular aging. The study revealed that a progressive decline in both vascular and myocardial tissue compliance emerged as the most robust predictor of accelerated cardiovascular aging. Notably, genetics were found to account for only 10.5% of cardiovascular aging, with modifiable risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia playing significant roles in hastening the aging process.
