Yale University is doing work to better understand the cognitive decline that takes place leading up to and during Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association confirms that “the destruction of brain synapses underlies the cognitive deficits experienced by patients with Alzheimer’s disease.” The new imaging technology that has allowed this discovery is called positron emission tomography, or PET. The assistant professor of psychiatry explains that “The findings help us understand the neurobiology of the disease and can be an important new biomarker to test the efficacy of new Alzheimer’s drugs”.
