A recent study published by JAMA explored the question: “Is there an association between bariatric surgery and the incidence of obesity-associated cancer and cancer-related mortality in patients with obesity?” It is understood that obesity increases the risk of a variety of cancers. But would weight loss, specifically from bariatric surgery, decrease that risk? The study looked at a pool of 30,000 patients and found that “bariatric surgery was significantly associated with a lower risk of obesity-associated cancer and cancer-related mortality.” In fact, the individuals who underwent the bariatric surgery had a 32% lower risk of developing cancer and a 48% lower risk of dying from it.
