Meditate More & Make Fewer Mistakes

Most of us know someone who swears by the power of meditation but for any of us who have never tried, meditation might seem like 30 minutes of trying to run away from our thoughts and to-do list. It turns out, meditation is a lot more than that and the benefits should be enough to intrigue even the most skeptical.

A study out of Michigan State University found that meditating may help us make fewer mistakes and be less forgetful. Sign us up! The type of meditation that they focused on is called “open monitoring meditation” which ​​“has you tune inward and pay attention to everything going on in your mind and body. The goal is to sit quietly and pay close attention to where the mind travels without getting too caught up in the scenery.” The study had participants who had never meditated before do 20 minutes of open monitoring meditation and after, complete a computerized distraction test while brain activity was monitored with electroencephalography (EEG). The study determined that the meditators were more likely to detect mistakes they made in the test than the control group. The next step with the study is to look at different types of meditation, test a broader range of participants, and examine the long-term effects of meditation.
