Low Levels of Vitamin D’s Link to Dementia

Recent research indicates a 40 percent lower likelihood of dementia development in individuals with elevated vitamin D levels. A comprehensive analysis involving over 12,000 participants observed their health for a decade, revealing various factors influencing the disease’s occurrence. Notably, a strong correlation was found between low vitamin D levels and dementia diagnosis. Women experienced a higher level of protection with vitamin D supplementation compared to men (49 percent versus 26 percent). Additionally, individuals carrying the APOE4 gene, associated with dementia, faced increased risk, albeit with a 33 percent reduction for gene carriers compared to a 47 percent reduction for non-carriers, even with supplementation. In the study, 75 percent of those not taking vitamin D developed dementia within ten years, in contrast to only 25 percent of vitamin D users.
