Live Bioelectronic Can Sense & Heal Skin

UChicago scientists have created a prototype for a “live bioelectronic” — a combination of living cells, gel, and electronics. This can integrate with living tissue. The device consists of several pieces. First, a flexible electronic circuit, a soft gel made from starch and gelatin, and bacteria that help treat skin conditions like psoriasis. In tests with mice, the devices could continuously monitor and improve psoriasis-like symptoms. This didn’t cause any irritation to the skin. The researchers envision applying this “ABLE platform” for longer-term treatments. They also look to extend it to other tissues like neurons or insulin production. After 15 years of live bioelectronic work, Tian’s team has achieved their goal of melding the electronic and biological worlds in this novel cyborg-like system.
