Genetic Test Reveals Risk of Cardiovascular Issues

Researchers at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine are exploring a novel genetic test that could provide valuable insights into a person’s risk of developing cardiovascular issues, particularly blood clots. This experimental “Platelet Score” focuses on assessing platelet reactivity, with hyperreactive platelets potentially indicating a higher risk of serious cardiovascular events. In a study of 254 patients who had undergone procedures to clear blocked leg arteries, the researchers found that those with hyperreactive platelets faced double the risk of heart attack, stroke, or major amputation compared to those without. The team believes this test could be instrumental in identifying high-risk patients who would benefit most from targeted antiplatelet therapy. By offering a more personalized approach to cardiovascular disease risk assessment and prevention, this innovative genetic test may represent a significant advancement in the field of preventive cardiology.
