You may have heard people claim that eating chocolate improves or maintains cognitive function. However, new research suggests this may not be the case… but don’t throw out your dark chocolate bars yet. Cacao has a range of other benefits including improving body composition, blood sugar, and gut health.
According to the Great Age Reboot, in a recent study titled “Effects of cocoa extract and a multivitamin on cognitive function: A randomized clinical trial”, “cocoa extract had no effect on global cognition. Fortunately, the secondary endpoint of the trial, the impact of daily multivitamin-mineral supplementation, relative to placebo, resulted in a statistically significant benefit on global cognition” and the result was “especially strong in participants with a history of cardiovascular disease.” While chocolate may not have significant impact on our cognition, it appears that multivitamin-mineral supplements do and they are inexpensive and easy to access. The Scientific Advisory Board found that “a multivitamin-multimineral for those over age 50 include a decrease in risk of cancer (18%), a decrease in recurrent cancers (23%) and of cardiovascular disease (25%) when the multivitamins are taken for 20 or more years.” Always consult your doctor before adding in any supplements
