We are no strangers to cold therapy and its benefits but a recent peer-reviewed study published in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health confirmed many of our beliefs. The study found that swimming “in cold water may cut ‘bad’ body fat in men and reduce the risk of disorders such as diabetes.” The review also shared “positive links between cold water swimming and brown adipose tissue (BAT), a type of ‘good’ body fat that is activated by cold. BAT burns calories to maintain body temperature unlike ‘bad’ white fat which stores energy.” Additional research is needed to understand the benefits and the potential risks better.
