Clinical Trial Yields Vision Improvement

About 79% of participants in a clinical trial experienced measurable vision improvement after receiving an experimental CRISPR-based gene editing treatment for a rare form of blindness called Leber Congenital Amaurosis Type 10. The trial, led by researchers from Oregon Health & Science University, Mass Eye & Ear, and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, evaluated the safety and effectiveness of EDIT-101, which is designed to edit a mutation in the CEP290 gene critical for sight. While the trial sponsor, Editas Medicine, has paused enrollment and is seeking a new partner for further development, the researchers consider the early results promising, with some participants reporting improved vision-related quality of life and ability to perform daily tasks. Further research is needed to determine ideal dosing, potential age-related effects, and refine measures for assessing impacts on activities of daily living. The study represents a landmark in the treatment of genetic diseases using CRISPR gene editing technology.
