Cleaning Up the Aging Brain

Scientists at the University of Rochester have discovered a promising approach to combat age-related neurological disorders by restoring the brain’s waste disposal system. Their research, published in Nature Aging, focuses on the glymphatic system, which uses cerebrospinal fluid to remove toxic proteins from the brain. As we age, this system slows down, potentially leading to conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The study revealed that cervical lymph vessels in the neck play a crucial role in this process, and their function declines with age. Remarkably, the researchers found that a drug commonly used to induce labor, prostaglandin F2α, can rejuvenate these vessels in older mice, effectively restoring the brain’s waste-clearing abilities to levels seen in younger animals.
