Can Skin Tone Impact How Certain Medications Are Absorbed?

Researchers have found that melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color, can unexpectedly bind to certain drug compounds, thereby potentially affecting drug safety and dosing across different skin tones. This discovery raises concerns about the efficacy of standard drug dosing, as current FDA guidelines for toxicity testing do not adequately address the impact of skin pigmentation on drug interactions. The researchers propose using 3D skin models with varying pigmentation levels to assess drug-binding properties across different skin types. In addition, they also highlight that genetic variations among minority groups can lead to significantly different drug responses, affecting up to 20% of all medications. The study’s authors call for a comprehensive overhaul of the FDA’s guidelines on clinical endpoints to align with the agency’s Diversity Action Plan and ensure more inclusive drug development practices.
