Calorie Restriction for Better Health

A recent study led by Yale explores whether there are significant health benefits from calorie restriction for humans. First, the researchers gathered data from 200 participants on what their baseline calorie intake is. Then, a portion of those participants reduced their intake by 14% and the rest continued eating as they normally would. The research went on for two years. According to Vishwa Deep Dixit, the senior author for the study, the results show that “a simple reduction in calories, and no specific diet, has a remarkable effect in terms of biology and shifting the immuno-metabolic state in a direction that’s protective of human health. So from a public health standpoint, I think it gives hope.” With so many conflicting beliefs on what sort of diet to eat, this study is an important one to show that no matter what diet you find, calorie reduction may have positive effects for many of us.
