Breakthrough in Treatment for Severe Asthma

A multinational study called SHAMAL, detailed in The Lancet, revealed that 92% of patients using benralizumab, a biologic therapy, could safely reduce inhaled steroid doses, with over 60% able to stop usage altogether. This breakthrough has significant implications for severe asthma patients, potentially minimizing or eliminating the adverse effects of inhaled steroids, such as osteoporosis, diabetes, and cataracts. Asthma affects nearly 300 million people globally, with 3 to 5% experiencing severe symptoms leading to daily challenges and frequent hospitalization. Led by Professor David Jackson, the study involved 208 patients across 22 sites in the UK, France, Italy, and Germany. Benralizumab, which reduces eosinophil levels, has shown unprecedented potential in averting steroid-related harm for a majority of severe asthma patients, highlighting a transformative aspect of biologic therapies in asthma care. Further studies will be needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of reducing or eliminating high-dose steroids with other biologic therapies.
